Let's not beat around the bush, eh! The reunion was successful and the meeting culminated in an overwhelming flourish of strings, horns and kazoos.  From the onset the venture was dogged by rain and gusty winds, the crew trickled in and out over the three days, wandering around attempting valiantly to make the best of it despite the weather.

My brave bookends appropriately geared for the stormy weather, were a marvellous support to me throughout the long weekend at the MJF.

Manly Wharf Hotel: Bracing myself for new arrivals   ADD PHOTO

.. here's my old friend from Berry Street, Little Judy Miller and her partner Phil Colson (Foreday Riders,  Colin Hay Band). Phil was well prepared for the rain,  formidable in his dri -as-a-bone, Judy remarked that I  looked exactly the same as in Berry Street, she obviously neglected to bring her spectacles? Roving guest artists The New Orlean Wanderers were next to 'appear' Peter Anson with jacket slung over one shoulder and banjo t'other looked exactly the same as the first time I saw him outside Surf City .. I too had neglected to bring my spectacles.  No, seriously except for extra padding and snow on the rooftops we  all looked exactly the same!
Next to make an appearance was the inimitable Terrence Darmody.
We  arranged to meet Peter in a side alley off the Corso on the Monday .. he had opted to quit his 'roving' and stay put, true to form there he was,  avec his brass section (have names will put up later), we volunteered to be rent-a-crowd. Old favourites were enjoyed including, of course,  Leadbelly.

Dave, Ross, Terry and I went  to search for Tony Burkys .. Terry wandered off and I became nervous, my intuition was telling me that Terry was a 'necessary ingredient' and must not stray. How right I was!

When Terry returned to the fold, he was excited  having just seen the Jugalug String Band, Philthy  D and Chris Blanchflower.  I managed to get a few shots off  before  Peter and the boys accompanied by Terry on harp broke into "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" .. ahh now tears were near. Must have a ciggie.

I  glanced up and there was Terry and Peter side by side ..  where's your camera girl??!!  Dave's big fat head was in the way so I jumped up on the bench.  God waved his hand, things just started happening - down the alley came John Mackey and  his partner Yuki on tambourine they took up their positions alongside Terry as if prearranged .. then to top it off down the lane, strumming his guitar came Tony Burkys in all his glory.  The lady seated beside me remarked that she could feel something strange and then asked, "what's happening,  they seem to be really enjoying themselves?"

"These guys used to play together in their teens 40 years ago .. and the jam was not prearranged." Terry, by this stage had whipped out his kazoo, Peter had began doing a little two-step, rasping away with gusto, and the grins on  their faces .. just priceless.

Later, Tony Burkys remarked that he was strolling by the lane and heard the kazoo and said to himself that could only be one person .. Terry Darmody. Much merth when Yuki whipped out her kazoo  and matched Terry with an impromtu call-response routine.

JEFF ST. JOHN

UPDATE Jeff can be contacted on Facebook and has recently released the ID LP 'Big Time Operators' 20/8/15

Circa 1965, Graham and I were off to the Folk Cellar in Oxford Street, Taylor Square! Looking every bit 'the beatniks' attired in the mandatory black garb, matching skivvys, Graham looked the part in his railway issue waistcoat and levis, stockinged legs hung from below my oversized jumper.

We boarded the train to Museum Station, and made our way up Oxford Street. The venue was below ground level near Crown Street.t

'I would like to introduce a young chap, Jeff St. John '.. . up struggled Jeff, attached to his crutches, he seated himself on a stool, and proceeded to play the harp. I was well and truly spellbound. Jeff's career  blossomed, his talents took him to great heights, he became a household name.

Jeff could been seen at 'Here' in North Sydney, University Round House, Greenwood Tree and most established venues in the 60s and 70s.

PYTHON LEE JACKSON

'Hi there, I don’t see any problem in you using that photo. Best to say thanks to David Bentley for the photo. Best wishes, Nick Warburton'

 FORMING OF PYTHON LEE JACKSON,
Interesting article by Nick Warburton with Python Lee's "Your Mother Should Have Warned You" and "Big City Lights" mp3s

… Don McCormack and John Helman had formed a blues outfit with mouth harpist Shane Duckham and a raspy-voiced guitarist named Peter Anson. .... The Syndicate predominantly jazz influenced, the new group was lent street cred by Anson, who had been a member of well-known Sydney blues/grunge band, The Missing Links. …. The group recruited disabled singer Jeffrey Leo Newton to fill Duckham’s shoes. With Newton on board, folk impresario Jim Carter entered the picture as the band’s manager. … When Carter opened Rhubarb’s disco in Neutral Bay on Sydney’s fashionable north shore in late 1965, The Id became house band ....

*Andre de Moller had a hit "Walk on Boy”, recently brought to my attention by Neil Smith .... According to Dave Bently, Andre dreamed up the name (Python Lee Jackson) while gazing at the chalkboard at Suzie Wong’s in Sydney. After McGhee arrived in Sydney in mid-May, the new line up had only a few days to rehearse a set list before Rhubarb’s … On 22 May, Sydney newspaper The Sun-Herald informed its readers in the “Glitter” column that Rhubarb’s had opened that week in “a cellar at the bottom end of Liverpool Street” and that the band there was Python Lee Jackson. … joined three weeks ago.

…. Rhubarb’s would provide a handy base and enable the musicians to develop a unique sound.'

WALK ON BOY

Lyrics as performed by Doc Watson, vocal/guitar, John Pilla, 2nd guitar, on(1966);transcribed by Manfred Helfert.  "Southbound"

I was born one mornin',
The rain a-pourin' down,
Heard my mammy say to my pappy,
"Let's call him John Henry Brown."

CHORUS:
Walk on, boy; walk on down the road
Ain't nobody in this whole wide world
A-gonna help you carry your load.

I left my mammy and pappy
Just about the age of ten;Lord,
I got me a job a-workin' on the levee
Totin' water for the hard workin' men.

One day my pappy told me,
Some advice I wanna give to you
--Son, find a good woman, be good to her,
An' she's gonna be good to you.

If anyone should ever ask you,
Just who is that fella Brown?
You can tell him I'm the boy
Who left his hammer smokin'

Where he beat that steam drill down.

*Andre De Moller The blues playing barrister is back where he belongs. It's been a few years since Dedham-based Andre brought his all star group to Christchurch Park.

Also in Andre's band will be Lincoln Anderson on bass, Greg Titheridge on drums, James Maddison on guitar and Joe Toomey on harmonica and keyboards player Max Middleton This will be blues from the top drawer.

Missing Links/Peter Anson

My recollections of Peter Anson

1964: Pete's band, as best I can recall were billed as the 'The Great Unwash' at 'Surf City', they were not appreciated by rockers or sharpies.  The 'surfies', however, detected something grand. Lead guitarist Peter Anson, with his long unkempt hair, rigged out in a motley collection of corduroy and denim - a guitar in tote ..  was a sight to behold. Most recall this band as The Missing Links.

I was shy, but not too shy to introduce myself to this 'wonderment'. I toddled off in hot pursuit as he headed off towards  the 'Folk Cellar' (below street level) in Victoria Street, where one could see the amazing Emma Hannah sing her rendition of "Waltzing Matilda". Pete went from Surf City to Beatle Village in Taylor Square, where The Easybeats were gaining popularity.

'They retreated to the relative calm of Beatle Village in Taylor Square, which became their headquarters, and it was here that they first crossed paths with another Stones-influenced band, The Showmen, who were to play an important role in the band's future ... '  read more  ..

I caught up with Pete again at Suzie Wong's in 1966, playing in the Syndicate with drummer Don McCormack. Don was into his iridology phase and lived close by in Randwick, . Thanks for the 'Tampa Red' EP Don!  love Virgo Lynne

Later in the 60s Pete joined Jeff St John and the ID, they gigged at the HERE, a dance venue in North Sydney, The Greenwood Tree and various Uni functions.  Here was Free for ladies!! The 'ticket' included a spaghetti bolognaise meal  (mandatory if one was to sell liquor).  During one of the Id's breaks, I asked Don to play my 45 rpm, "That's the Way We 2 Should Live", it was a jerky 'jumped up' 12 bar blues, the flip-side was "Untrue", the band twigged that it was none other than their bashful lead guitarist,  Peter Anson.

Peter has played with various bands including:- Missing Links, Jeff St John and the Id, Foreday Riders, Roger Janes, Wild Oats, Syndicate, Chincogen ..

"Untrue"

(Tracks need to be played thru twice for best effect)

Peter Anson June 15, 2008 ... "G'day Lynette, I'm glad you got in touch and that you have that blog. Would you be able to put these tracks on your blog for all the world to hear. They are gems. I've sent copies to Red's record company. You are doing a wonderful thing with your blog...thanks again. Love...peace...and ...light...Pete Anson"

Peter Anson ... "Happy New Year.....Your new site is terrific. It looks clean and is easy to move around. That photo of the 'Janes' band is a beauty. Looks like early or mid 70's. A bit early for me. Roger and I didn't meet until 1980.  I worked with the band off and on from then until Roger's death in 2000.  Roger and I made 3 albums with him playing Dobro and electric steel guitar, as well as singing and slide trombone. Me, I played banjo, sang and played guitar. I've attached a track from our album 'Slide Jive' .. pete "
